Kurdish Americans in San Diego: A Community Profile

kasakurdan@gmail.com January 30, 2025

San Diego’s Kurdish community is smaller than Nashville’s or Dallas’s, but it has a character all its own. The city’s mild climate and relatively affordable (by California standards) housing attracted Kurdish families beginning in the 1990s, and the community has grown gradually through family sponsorships and secondary migration from other American cities.

Many of San Diego’s Kurdish residents work in healthcare, logistics, and the service industry. The Kurdish Cultural Center of San Diego has long served as a gathering point for community events, language programs, and celebrations of holidays like Newroz and Eid. Kurdish children attend public schools across several school districts, and a small but active group of young professionals is emerging as community leaders.

The geographic distance from larger Kurdish communities on the East Coast and in Nashville makes San Diego’s community somewhat self-contained. That insularity has in some ways strengthened local bonds — people rely on each other more because the broader network is farther away. KASA’s online programs have been particularly valuable here, connecting San Diego’s Kurdish youth with language instruction and cultural resources they would not otherwise have access to.
